The Guardian has recreated a 6×9 solitary confinement cell in VR, designed to be viewed with Google's cheap cardboard VR viewers, which uses your phone for screens.
America imprisons more people than any other country in the world, ever. State and federal governments routinely use solitary confinement as a form of punishment (including punishment for whistleblowers), despite the fact that the UN deems this a form of torture. Many prisoners in solitary are doubled up, with a second prisoner in a cell so small they have to take turns standing.
What’s it like to spend 23 hours a day in a cell measuring 6×9 feet for days, weeks, months or even years? 6×9 is the Guardian's first virtual reality experience, which places you inside a US solitary confinement prison cell and tells the story of the psychological damage that can ensue from isolation.
