Netflix has released a trailer for a documentary film about the life and work of the great musician and vocalist Nina Simone. What Happened, Miss Simone? was made with the involvement of the late singer's daughter and the Simone estate, and will be released on June 26, 2015.
Some 100 hours of previously-unheard interviews, rare concert footage, and Simone's own letters and diaries are part of the source material, as are interviews with her friends and collaborators, and daughter Lisa Simone Kelly.
This doc looks so much more promising than the upcoming biopic starring Zoe Saldana, controversially, as the High Priestess of Soul.
What Happened, Miss Simone? is directed by twice Oscar nominated filmmaker Liz Garbus, whose past documentary subjects include chess champion Bobby Fischer and Marilyn Monroe. The film will be made available in all Netflix territories on June 26.
