Rael Dornfest has just wrapped up the opening keynote at the O'Reilly Emerging Technologies conference in San Diego, called Rules for Remixing, a high-intesity fifteen minutes on how technologies can be designed to encourage hacking and remixing and reuse. Here's my impressionistic notes from his talk:
Remix your network:
* Apple untethered the laptop
* Commodity hardware made it cheap
* WiFi hackers untethered everything else: cons, hotel rooms, coffee shops, corners
* Hotspots spring up like dandelions
* Intel brands WiFi
* Apple Airport Express untethers the base-station: just plug it in and wait for the light to turn green
