The latest fuck-you from Oath — the Verizon division created to manage the zombie assets of AOL and Yahoo, bought at a ridiculous premium and then written down by more than 99% — is the impending drawdown of Yahoo Groups, with mass deletions of all stored "Files, Polls, Links, Photos, Folders, Calendar, Database, Attachments, Conversations, Email Updates, Message Digest, Message History" as of Dec 14.
Yahoo Groups will limp along as private, invite-only groups with limited functionality (though this is a pretty obvious prelude to a total shutdown). Users may be able to download some of the data they entrusted to Yahoo via the company's privacy dashboard.
It's another gift from noted historical monster Robert Bork and Ronald Reagan, who dismantled the antitrust protections that prohibited overcapitalized basket-case companies like Yahoo from buying and then trashing promising startups.
Yahoo has made the decision to no longer allow users to upload content to the Yahoo Groups site. Beginning October 28, you won't be able to upload any more content to the site, and as of December 14 all previously posted content on the site will be permanently removed. You'll have until that date to save anything you've uploaded.
