Sydney’s annual Vivid festival fills the harbour with barges equipped with powerful projectors that use the buildings ringing the harbour (especially the iconic Sydney Opera House) as geometrically complex screens for projection-mapped lightshows, synchronised to music.
I had the pleasure of speaking at this festival some years ago and seeing it firsthand, and it’s breathtaking. Projection-mapping is a medium that is really coming into its own (see, for example, the superb refreshes at Disney rides accomplished through projection-mapping) and experiences with the Vivid Festival were a big part of why projection mapping makes so many appearances in my novel Walkaway.
Here’s a video of this year’s gorgeous Sydney Opera House projections, created by Jonathan Zawada and titled “Metamathemagical.”
