For several years, I've been honored to volunteer on the advisory board of Simply Secure (previously) a nonprofit consultancy that does open research on usability in cryptographic privacy tools and consults with firms to help make their tools more broadly usable and accessible, especially for vulnerable groups who are often left out of consideration when secure tools are being designed.
Our inaugural executive director, Scout Brody, is moving on after a wonderful tenure, and we're looking to hire her successor. We're especially looking in the USA or the EU (Berlin would be ideal).
The role:The Executive Director is the organization’s strategic leader. They work closely with the core team, the board, and the extended community to effect change in line with our mission. This includes overseeing all dimensions of programmatic work, fundraising, communication, and operations.
A successful candidate will be responsible for:
Defining and refining a strategic vision for the organization, its mission, and its path for sustainable success.

Understanding the diverse communities in which the organization operates, and promoting our work to relevant partners and beneficiaries.*
Building relationships with partners and funders; managing the formulation of open research proposals and consulting projects, as well as the submission of grant proposals.*
Overseeing daily operations, including supervision of employees/contractors, HR and legal processes, budgeting, and financial management.*
Engaging in human-centered design and design-research projects and professional education activities with a diverse group of community members.*
Building and maintaining a deep understanding of the design challenges relating to privacy, security, transparency, and other issues of ethical technology.Our ideal candidate has demonstrated experience in:

Leading teams or organizations, especially distributed and/or international ones.
Managing day-to-day operations, including human resources.*
Crafting team or project budgets, reviewing financial statements, and making basic financial projections.*
Negotiating nonprofit ecosystem and/or consulting relationships, in the United States and/or in Europe.*
Navigating diverse communities, including those distributed across geographies, cultures, and professional orientations (including technologists, designers, advocates, and/or funders).*
Engaging in research projects, especially qualitative and/or human-centered ones.
Overseeing successful delivery of complex projects.*
Communicating effectively, including speaking publicly about their work and writing persuasively and accessibly.*
Training or a formal background in human-centered design, computer science, or software engineering is desirable but not required.
