Back in April, afrofuturist icon Janelle Monáe (previously released Dirty Computer, an “emotion picture” that serves as accompaniment to her album of the same name.
I’m late to the party watching it, but I’m so, so glad I did. In some ways, it’s a classic rock-opera or hiphopera, but its dystopian science fiction storyline, Burning Man sets, punk rock fashion, sexiness, queerness, and message of resistance and indomtability set it apart. It tickled me in the same place that, say, Terry Gilliam’s Brazil got me, and, not incidentally, the music is amazing.
So worth 40 minutes of your time.
