From the camp of two lawmakers who recently introduced Senate legislation to establish “an independent National Commission on Security and Technology Challenges,” news that Senators Mark R. Warner (D-VA) and Cory Gardner (R-CO) will join their Senate colleagues in discussing the legislation on the Senate Floor. You can watch it live, and you should. Today at 3pm ET/12pm PT.
From the Senators' offices:
As you know, yesterday Sens. Warner and Cory Gardner (R-CO) – along with Brian Schatz (D-HI), Susan Collins (R-ME), Michael Bennet (D-CO), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Angus King (I-ME) and Dean Heller (R-NV) – introduced Senate legislation to establish an independent National Commission on Security and Technology Challenges. The digital security Commission will bring together all stakeholders, including tech leaders, law enforcement, the intelligence community, privacy and civil liberties advocates, computer science researchers, and global commerce leaders, who will be charged with developing recommendations for maintaining privacy and digital security while also finding ways to keep criminals and terrorists from exploiting these technologies to escape justice.
Today at 3pm ET/12pm PT, Sen. Warner and Sen. Gardner will lead a group of their co-sponsors in a colloquy on the Senate floor to discuss the legislation, and what they hope to achieve in seeking recommendations for Congress on the appropriate balance between privacy and security.
