Howto: make your own fantastically detailed Star Trek: TOS bridge playset

David Weiberg handed down his childhood set of Star Trek: original series action figures to his eight-year-old son, and then the two of them built a fantastically detailed, correctly scaled replica of the original Enterprise’s bridge to go with them.

Weiberg’s posted a detailed Instructable explaining his method. It’s a combination of table-saw-cut wood, PVC sheeting, styrene, and Apoxie putty. The chairs were cast from urethane resin.

I grew up with the larger figures, which had their own bridge (with a spinning transporter!), but I have to admit that this is way cooler. Almost as cool as the full-size replica bridge at my local D&D store in the 1980s where they held weekend RPG and tabletop strategy games.

If you know where I can get a photo of the latter, I would be most grateful.

This project started when I found my old Star Trek TOS playmates figures. I gave them to my eight year old son who had become a fan of the old show. He began building simple cardboard play pieces. Inspired by the clean wooden design of some of his other toys I set out to design and create a modular play set that he could use to assemble various rooms aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise. I wanted a set that could break down and store easily. I tried to use scrap materials where I could. The bridge was the biggest challenge so I started there.
