Cop who demanded photo of sexting-accused teen's penis commits suicide

Detective David Edward Abbott, a member of the Virginia-Washington DC Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force became Internet famous when he obtained a warrant to inject a child with an erection-causing drug so that he could photograph the child’s erect penis and compare it to an image sexted to another child.

Abbott then sued his victim’s attorney for outing him in the newspaper. The child got one-year’s probation.

Abbot served as a youth hockey coach. In connection with that role, he was accused of raping and trying to rape children: “two counts of indecent liberties by a custodian and two counts of using a communication device to solicit sexual offenses with a young boy.” When the police came to arrest him on these charges, he shot and killed himself.

The Manassas City Police Department memorialized the dead policeman with a laudatory statement that said, in part, “we are grateful for the contributions Det. Abbott made during his time with Manassas City Police.”

This is a tragic and sad day for the Abbott family, the juvenile victims and their families, the Manassas City Police Department, and our community. In spite of these recent developments regarding the serious allegations against him, we are grateful for the contributions Det. Abbott made during his time with Manassas City Police, to include the prosecution and conviction of hundreds of criminals. His family and peers request privacy during this time as we grieve and struggle to accept the realities of such a loss.
