On Saturday, Elinor Dempsey, 54, was surfing Morro Strand State Beach near San Luis Obispo, California when she noticed a great white shark approaching her.

It knocked her off the board but fortunately the shark ended up with a bite of fiberglass not flesh.

“First I thought it was a dolphin and I thought, ‘What the hell is he doing?’ ” Dempsey told The Tribune. “And he kind of landed on my board. Then I realized he had taken a chunk. And I was, like, that’s not what dolphins do.”

Authorities closed the beach for 72 hours.
