This Sunday, on NBC Bay Area, join Northern California television icon Doug McConnell, as he visits the Quiroste Valley Cultural Preserve.
In 1769 the Portola expedition came upon the native tribes living in California’s Quiroste Valley. This began our short history of Europeans largely wiping out California’s indigenous culture, however today the State Parks service, along with Sempervirens, Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, and the Girl Scouts are working together to preserve a bit of it.
This lead story explores the beautiful Quiroste Valley by the San Mateo coast where Portola’s expedition made “first contact” with the native people in 1769 before going on to “discover” San Francisco Bay.
You will get to see firsthand the wonderful collaborations underway between Sempervirens Fund, the Amah Mutsun Tribal Band, California State Parks, University of California researchers, and the Girl Scouts of Northern California to re-introduce native land management practices and to share this knowledge with future generations.
Tune in to watch the Quiroste Valley television segment on OpenRoad with Doug McConnell on Sunday, August 9, 2015 at 8:00 PM on NBC Bay Area. After the segment airs, the Sempervirens Fund will share it on their website.
