I’m glad Stephen Coles of Fonts in Use wrote about the creation and evolution of our Jackhammer Jill mascot and logo, because I forgot most of the details!
Jackhammer Jill is a mascot for internet magazine Boing Boing which was part of the publication’s logo for many years. The original logo by co-founder Mark Frauenfelder used 04b_19, a bitmap font by Yuji Oshimoto. Jill is also a font: FF Peecol, a set of mix-and-match character-building dingbats released in 1998 by FontFont and drawn by pixelmasters Steffen Sauerteig, Kai Vermehr, and Svend Smital of eBoy. (In 2007, eBoy redesigned the mark with new lettering, but it was dropped two years later.)
Jill was created by mixing a pig-tailed girl glyph for the top half and a construction worker glyph for the bottom.
If you miss Jill, you can buy this Boing Boing T-shirt!
