Noah Swartz writes, “Last night I got a chance to see a screening of It’s Gonna Blow, a documentary about the underground scene in San Diego directed and produced by Bill Perrine.”
It follows the move away from the violence of skinhead hardcore shows which caused the experimental music scene to flourish at venues like The Casbah and The Che around San Diego. The film is full of delightful grainy camcorder concert footage and intimate, often funny, interviews with the likes of John Reis (Rocket from the Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, Pitchfork), Ian Mackaye (Fugazi), Rob Crow (Pinback, Heavy Vegetable, Thingy), and even Tom Delonge (Blink-182).
Right now Bill is looking to get enough money to produce a DVD of the film so that people who can’t get too a screening can see the film. But in addition to the movie he’s managed to get his hands on loads of rare vinyl and CDs from the indie labels that promoted these bands before they either broke up or got scooped up by national labels. They’re available as perks for the higher tier donations along with other cool rare memorabilia.
The film itself is a blast and will have you alternating between seat dancing, laughing, and frantically scribbling down band names to look up once you leave the theater. This is all the best weirdo that never made it onto the radio in the 90s as told straight from the mouths of the artists who made it.
