Desktop aquaponics system turns your fish tank into a garden

microfarm

Ornamental aquariums are so pre-apocalypse. It’s time to turn your fish tank into something more useful, like a platform for growing food. The Springworks MicroFarm ($199), which goes on-sale later in March, sits atop a standard 10-gallon tank that you provide. It comes with a special pump and timer to flood and drain the plants, a bag of clay for the grow bed, and seeds for herbs like sweet basil and oregano. The MicroFarm was created with the help of industrial design firm Altitude in Boston.
