Curious Stardust science/art writer Heather Sparks (aka my sister-in-law) is hosting a "Science at the Oscars" Google hang-out today at 1pm PT. Her guests include a cosmologist, nanoscientist, and neuroscientist!
Heather says:
It’s Oscars week, and science is in the spotlight: The Imitation Game and The Theory of Everything have 13 nominations between them, both vying for Best Picture and Best Actor. It's the first time ever that more than one Best Picture nominee has focused on science.
We're going to delve into the real work of Alan Turing and Stephen Hawking, with real scientists. We will also discuss the movie Interstellar. Joining me will be astrophysicist Mandeep Gill, nanoscientist Katie McGill, and cognitive theoretician, Sean Escola.
Mandeep Gill is an observational cosmologist with the Kavli Institute for
Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology at Stanford.
Katie McGill, a doctoral candidate, is studying two dimensional nanomaterials at the Kavli Institute at Cornell for Nanoscale Science .
Sean Escola, an Assistant Professor at the Kavli Institute for Brain Science at Columbia University.
We're taking questions, before or during the webcast, with hashtag #OscarsScience.
