Watch 23 of the best dolly zooms in cinematic history

Vashi Nedomansky compiled this terrific collection of famous dolly zoom shots. Cinematographer Irmin Roberts used it to great effect in Hitchcock’s Vertigo, and it quickly entered the language of cinema to convey a moment of revelation, usually an unpleasant one.

Few directors use it more than once in a film. The most subtle is probably the overdose scene in Pulp Fiction.

Spielberg has used it to great effect in most of his films.

Scorcese’s Sonny Liston fight scene set piece in Raging Bull has a famous dolly zoom, and the scene in Goodfellas where Henry Hill realizes he’s going to get whacked:
