Name your price for more than 12 DRM-free books from Harpercollins, support charity, and strike a blow for freedom!
It's a really big deal that Harpercollins has teamed up with the Humble Bundle. When I was curating the first of these bundles, a bunch of big name Harpercollins writers — and their editors — were incredibly excited about the opportunity, only to have it crushed by head office, who wouldn't allow them to sell books without DRM.
The downside of this bundle is that many of these books are not published by Harpercollins outside of the US, and the UK/Australian/etc publishers are being dicks about cooperating. That means that, for example, Neil Gaiman's American Gods isn't included in the bundle for purchasers in the UK, because it's published by Hachette here, and Hachette are the world's most doctrinaire DRM advocates (despite the fact that there are dozens of high-availability unauthorized copies that can be had with one or two clicks, meaning that DRM or no, it's trivial to pirate this book and Hachette is just driving people who are trying to give them money into the pirate option).
But the bundle has some great material, including Sean Williams's Twinmaker, Paulo Coelho's Witch of Portobello, Lois McMaster Bujold's Curse of Challon, and many others. You can divert some or all of your payment to three very worthy charities: First Book, Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America Emergency Medical Fund, and the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. And every time you buy, you prove to reactionaries in the boardrooms of companies like Hachette that treating readers as thieves is a losing proposition.
Ten noteworthy novels. The Humble Bookperk Bundle Presented by HarperCollins offers 10 incredible novels. Pay what you want for The Curse of Chalion, American Gods, Busting Vegas, Twinmaker and Map of Bones with an excerpt from The Sixth Extinction. If you pay more than the average price, you'll also get Angel's Ink, The Wasteland Saga, By the Blood of Heroes and The Witch of Portobello. Pay $10 or more and you'll receive all of the above, plus Dead Witch Walking, the first book in Kim Harrison's The Hollows series, along with Trouble on Reserve, an unpublished "Hollows" short available exclusively from Humble Bundle for the next 2 weeks!
Due to worldwide publishing rights issues, Map of Bones and The Sixth Extinction (Excerpt) are not available for users in the United Kingdom. American Gods is not available to users in the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Australia.
