Noah Scalin writes "At long last I'm finally publishing all 365 of my original Skull-A-Day creations in a single book! I've partnered with Chop Suey Books, an amazing local independent bookseller here in Richmond, Virginia to finally create the ultimate volume of my yearlong skull art making project. The store is even launching a new imprint, Chop Suey Books Books, just to make and distribute this beautiful hardcover volume (if I do say so myself, since I'm the one that designed it!). I'm most excited about sharing a new model for artists and local businesses to work together to create something outside of the old systems, that can benefit us both, as well as our community. To kick things off we've decided to pre-sell the book on Kickstarter with some unique thank you gifts, including some of the actual original pieces of the project! I hope you'll check it out."
$24 gets you an early-bird book. Noah is a guy who ships what he starts, too.
On June 2, 2007 I had a vision: “I should make a skull every single day for a year.” The timing was perfect for such a random idea, because at that moment I was feeling completely stuck on a creative and professional level and needed something to get me inspired again. Two days later I set off on a journey that would completely transform my life.
While I expected I would have some fun and maybe get a bit of attention as a part of the process I could never have expected the actual results: multiple book deals; opportunities to speak about creativity around the world; a visit to the Martha Stewart show; exhibitions of my art in galleries and museums internationally. But most importantly it allowed me to connect with an amazing group of fans around the world whose enthusiasm and dedication for the project transformed it from a just a personal expression into a community of inspiration. The site continues today (version 8.0!) thanks entirely to the endless submissions from creative skull fans young and old, around the world!
The original pieces I created that year continue to inspire me to do new things and I am constantly amazed to discover how I apply the creative lessons I learned during the project to my life on a daily basis.
