Our friend, artist Molly Crabapple, started Dr. Sketchy's figure drawing sessions in Brooklyn in 2005. Since then, it's grown into a network of art extravaganzas around the world. I have been to a bunch of the LA-based Dr. Sketchy sessions, which are produced by Bob Self of Baby Tattoo Books. On January 25, Dr. Sketchy's LA will have its annual 26-hour drawing marathon.
Bob says:
This weekend is the annual Dr. Sketchy's Los Angeles Figure Drawing Marathon. Once again, Baby Tattoo Books is proudly presenting 26 continuous hours of inspiration and ultra-slow-motion entertainment for voyeuristic artists and artistic voyeurs who want to draw, paint or visually analyze über-charismatic costumed and nude women and men. Special guests scheduled to participate in this year's draw-a-thon include "America's Got Talent" star Prince Poppycock, renowned painter/provocateur Michael Hussar, and alt supermodels Ulorin Vex, Skin Diamond and Mosh. Attendees are given wristbands for in-and-out privileges, so they can come and go as they please (although some artists have been known to brave the event's entire epic duration, working themselves into a sketching frenzy and eventually drifting into a fuzzy-brained drawing dream-state. In addition to models galore, the event boasts free gifts at the door and valuable prizes awarded for impromptu drawing contests. Seasoned professionals and adventuresome beginners are equally welcome. The ticket price is small and the fun is big.
