Mary Ellen Macintyre, with the Chronicle Herald, reports that hunters inadvertently (but legally) killed an animal said to hold deep spiritual significance to the Mi'kmaq.
A ceremony involving the pure white hide of what Mi’kmaq consider a sacred moose will take place next week for the benefit of the hapless hunters who shot the animal.
“They didn’t know it was a spirit animal, and all we could do was ask them in a good way for the hide of the animal and they happily said they would give it to us,” Emmett Peters, a Mi’kmaq elder, said Friday in a telephone interview.
Awkward.
