In the early 1970s, San Diego artist Phil Kirkland, now 85, created a slew of fantastic illustrations for textbooks and science magazines of the time (and also science fiction novels). The image above appeared in Life And Health (1972) with the caption: “If government can legislate against drugs, may it some day require people to take them?”
