I do not speak Japanese, so I don't know where this came from or what's going on, but it's terrifying. WFMU blog-editor Lukas asks,
* Did the octopus have sex with the walrus, or where does the baby come from?
* Why does everybody abuse it?
* Are the two octopuses really one and the same person?
I don't know, but the result is what the Teletubbies would look if they were on PCP instead of E. Link to MP4 video, about 10MB, via WFMU's "Beware of the Blog." (Thanks, Coop!)

The weird octopus video is from a truly bizarre 1960's Japanese TV show called Kure Kure Takora, or "Gimme Gimme Octopus". Kind of the Japanese version of H.R. Puffnstuff. Link has lots more info.

Here's more info. My Japanese friends tell me it's equally bizarre even if you do speak the language!

i was happily surprised to see a posting on this wonderful japanese TV series on boing boing and WFMU. i first came across it last year when my professor Kota Ezawa (Link) shared it with the class. Kota while Japanese, grew up in Germany and has no connection with his culture, bought this for his daughter who loves it, even though the language is incomprehensible. He was trying to make a point to me that some things just don't need explaining for people to generally get the gist of the story – as long as the story is very simple – the concepts and symbolisms used to tell that story could by completely wild and chaotic. He gave me a copy of the best of the series which i refer to like a bible of "how to construct children's programming" which i am using for my MFA exhibition recreation of my own childrens program called "Gunk Land or The Third Space" (Link).
