I just bought my first real camera, a Panasonic/Leica Lumix DMC-LX1 (I gave up on Casio Exilims after getting boned by their service depot). I bought it on the advice of Jacob Applebaum, a Boing Boing pal and a fine photographer.
For the past couple weeks, I've been basically using the camera on "automatic" mode, and I've been really impressed with the quality of the photos I've gotten, but I know that there's a lot of room for improvement, if I can only learn a little more about photography.
Photonotes.org is a great site for a hobbyist like me. It has a great Beginner FAQ, as well as an amazing encylopedic dictionary of photography terminology. In just a few minutes' browsing, I've already picked up a number of tips that I can't wait to put into action.
